Without a good SEO plan in place you might as well give up altogether. The big daddy of search engines called Google are constantly moving the goalposts as it were and in their quest for making search more intuitive and a real user experience, make life hard for the humble SEO consultants and web masters wanting to optimize their sites.
With the rolling out of Google Caffeine, it looks like on-page optimization has made a comeback and Google rewards this.
When optimizing your sites here's a few pointers to keep in mind.
1. Get good content for your site. It doesn't matter if it's a 3 page mini site or a corporate monster. Make sure the content is original even if you have to re-write it.
2. Make sure you have quality page descriptions (meta descriptions) for all your pages.
3. Page titles should be different on EVERY page with your keyword in it
4. Meta keywords should also be different for pages. Do not use the same keywords throughout your site.
5. Make sure you have H1, H2 H3 and H4 tags in place - this is very important and they should also contain your keywords, too.
6. Apart from an xml sitemap that you should submit to Google's webmasters tools, you should also have an html sitemap. This helps Google when indexing your site and also display your urls as links to your different posts and pages.
7. Video is also an important part in today's SEO and you should have video on your site, too. Also consider using a video sitemap and submit that to Google as well.
8. Consider using an about page, privacy policy, disclaimer and contact pages on your site. A well thought out website which has these ingredients shows that it's not just a thin affiliate site your putting up. It shows Google you care about its user experience.
9. On site linking is extremely important. Think Wikipedia when linking, even if it's a small site. Link from the main page to sub pages using main keywords and secondary keywords. Also link back from your sub pages to the main page using main keywords and secondary keywords - just like Wikipedia!
10. Keep the blog/website alive. Do this by incorporating RSS feeds, social bookmarking buttons such as the Facebook "Like" Button, Delicious, Digg, Reddit etc.
All these things with fresh content now and then will keep your site off the internet scrap heap and alive. In the next article I'll be talking about links and how they are important for your site.
